Rofel "Sexuality, Class and Conflict in a Lesbian Workplace" 今回紹介するこの文章 "Sexuality, Class and Conflict in a Lesbian Workplace" 『あるレズビアン職場でのセクシュアリティ、階級、闘争』（直訳）は、20ページほどの調査報告で、1984年に発表されたものである。ここで取り上げられているのは、レズビアンによるレズビアンが働く自動車修理店の話。その名は Amazon Auto Repair。1978年に二人のレズビアンが自分たちの貯金1400ドルを元手に立ち上げ、順調に業績を伸ばし、1981年には従業員11人を抱えるようになる。しかし翌1982年2月に労働闘争が始まり、さらにその翌年1983年問題は解決しないまま終わってしまった。 えっ、最初順調だったのに4年やそこらで会社が立ち行かなくなったってことですか？何で？どうして？何があったの？ 経営者がカムアウト済みのレズビアンだったからいいところももちろんあったのだ。雇われている人も同性の恋人がいるのを隠さなくて良いし、アメリカンに昼休みにパートナーと食事することだってできたし、職場の雰囲気もすごく良かったという。けれども例えばここの給料は出来高払いだったから、技術がない人がきちんとトレーニングを受けられなければ、労働時間は長いのに賃金は安いままになることをはじめ、そもそも経営者と労働者は様々な面で考えが違っていた。こういった根本にあった問題が丁寧な当事者たちへのインタビューを元に明らかにされていく。 結局これはアマゾンのストライキがどんな風に始まりそしてどう終わったのか、その歴史が語られている「だけ」なのだけれど、実際自分の働いている環境だとか経済的な状況を考えると全然他人事ではなかった。時代や社会背景が違っても、今の自分がお金を必要とする暮らしを選んでいるなら、必ずぶつかる問題のいくつかについて他人の経験から学ぶことがあると思う。特に難しさの理由が似ていたら学べることは多いし、そういう難しさを共通の問題と捉える人同士が話すことで生産的な解決策が得られるかもしれない。 さてこの文章は "Homo Economics: Capitalism, Community, and Lesbian and Gay Life" という本に収められたものの一編です。この本は、最近アメリカのゲイっておしゃれな都会生活者のイメージが一部あるけど本当に儲かってるの？儲けてるの？雇用や消費、社会保障などの経済面から米国のレズビアンやゲイの置かれてる状況って実際どうなの？というテーマで文章を集めた本です。本当は他のエッセイも紹介したかったのですが、購入してから2年も経つのにちっともまとまりがつかないので、この文章だけまず紹介することにしました。 * * * <<お知らせ>> "Sexuality, Class and Conflict in a Lesbian Workplace" by Kath Weston and Lisa B.
